How to prepare for your waxing appointment

A great wax starts before you even arrive. With a little preparation, you’ll get a smoother, more comfortable result that lasts longer, and after 30 years of waxing in Durham, we know exactly what makes the difference. Here’s how to get the best out of your appointment.

Get the hair length right

This is the one that matters most. Hair should be about 5mm long, roughly the size of a grain of rice. Too short and there isn’t enough for the wax to grip; too long and it can be more uncomfortable than it needs to be. If you’re growing out after shaving, give it around two to three weeks.

Exfoliate gently, 24 to 48 hours before

A light exfoliation a day or two beforehand lifts away dead skin and helps free any hairs sitting just under the surface, which means a cleaner result and less chance of ingrown hairs. Keep it gentle, and don’t exfoliate on the day itself.

Come with clean, product-free skin

On the day, skip the moisturiser, oil and lotion on the area being waxed. Clean, dry skin lets the wax do its job properly. If you’re coming straight from the gym or a busy day, a quick freshen up beforehand is perfect.

Avoid heat and strong treatments

Give hot baths, saunas, sunbeds and strong actives a miss for 24 hours before and after. Heat and sun leave skin more sensitive, and waxing freshly warmed or sunburned skin is no fun for anyone.

Time it well

If you can, avoid the few days right before or during your period, when skin tends to feel more sensitive. Planning for an event? Book your wax a day or two ahead rather than the morning of, so any redness has time to settle.

Feeling nervous? Just say

If it’s your first wax, or your first with us, tell your therapist. We do this all day, every day, in a calm and completely judgment-free way, and a few words at the start help us put you at ease and work at your pace.

After your wax

For the next 24 to 48 hours, keep things gentle: stay out of pools and saunas, hold off on makeup over the area, wear loose clothing, and drink plenty of water. Your skin will thank you.
