08 Jul What’s Damaging Your Skin Barrier (And How to Fix It)
The Post-Pandemic Skin Shift
Over the past five years, skincare trends have changed dramatically. During lockdown, people started experimenting at home with exfoliating acids, retinols, and at-home peels, often layering too many active ingredients without understanding how they interact. Since then, I have seen a huge rise in clients with stripped, inflamed, and sensitised skin.
According to the British Association of Dermatologists, over 60 percent of adults in the UK now report some form of skin sensitivity, up from 38 percent before 2020. Most of this is due to overuse of exfoliating acids and harsh cleansers.
Many people believe the answer to acne or texture problems is to strip the skin, dry it out, or use stronger actives. But how can you repair the skin if the barrier the very thing that keeps it protected is already compromised?
At Sirens, we take a completely different approach. We support the skin so it can function the way it is meant to. We focus on natural repair, hydration, and rebalancing before introducing any active treatments.
What Damages the Skin Barrier
-
Over-exfoliating
Using scrubs, acids, or peels too often removes essential lipids and weakens the skin’s ability to hold water. -
Harsh cleansing products
Foaming or high-pH cleansers can strip away protective oils. Research from the International Journal of Cosmetic Science found that skin exposed to alkaline products takes up to six hours to rebalance its pH. -
Skipping moisturiser
When hydration and lipids are low, the skin cannot rebuild itself. Moisture loss leads to tightness, itching, and sensitivity. -
Stress and lifestyle
Studies show that chronic stress increases cortisol, which slows down the skin’s healing response and weakens the barrier. -
Cold weather and central heating
Dry indoor air can double water loss from the surface of the skin in under an hour, according to dermatological research.
Signs Your Barrier Needs Help
• Redness or inflammation
• Flaking, tightness, or itching
• Breakouts that will not clear
• Stinging when you apply skincare
• Sudden reactions to products you once tolerated
If this sounds familiar, your skin barrier is likely compromised.
How We Rebuild the Barrier
At Sirens, we never jump into strong treatments until the skin is ready. Every facial starts with an assessment of how the skin is functioning. If the barrier is damaged, we work first to restore it.
Our approach:
• Simplify your skincare
Take a break from exfoliants and strong actives for at least two weeks. Your skin needs space to recover.
• Hydrate and protect
Use a hydrating mist followed by a barrier-repairing oil. A good example is pairing a mineral-rich mist with a nourishing oil such as DMK Herb and Mineral Mist with Herbal Pigment Oil.
• Switch to gentle cleansing
Avoid foaming cleansers and use a cream or milk cleanser that respects your skin’s natural pH.
• Get professional guidance
A proper skin consultation ensures products and treatments are suited to your skin’s condition, not just its appearance.
Treatments That Strengthen the Barrier
We offer several treatments in our Durham salon that rebuild and protect the skin’s natural defence:
• DMK Enzyme Therapy – This works at a cellular level to encourage your skin to function properly again. It stimulates circulation and oxygenation, helping the skin rebuild itself naturally.
• Germaine de Capuccini Spa Facials – Calm, hydrate, and nourish without causing inflammation. These facials are ideal when the skin feels tight, sore, or reactive.
• LED Light Therapy – Uses clinically proven wavelengths to reduce inflammation, accelerate repair, and support a healthy barrier.
Clinical studies show that LED therapy can increase healing speed by up to 200 percent and significantly reduce redness after professional treatments.
Why Our Approach Is Different
We believe in working with the skin, not against it. You will not find harsh peels, aggressive acids, or fad treatments here. We only use professional methods that respect the skin’s structure and natural rhythm.
We do offer peels, but only when your skin is ready. There is no sense stripping a layer that is already struggling. Healthy skin responds better, heals faster, and gives more consistent results.
As I always tell clients: “Your skin knows what to do. It just needs the right environment to do it.”
If your skin constantly feels reactive, red, or unpredictable, the answer is rarely another active product. It is about helping your skin find balance again. The barrier is your body’s first line of defence and deserves the same respect as any other part of your health.
At Sirens, we specialise in restoring that balance and giving your skin the time and tools it needs to heal. Once your barrier is strong, everything else glow, clarity, and resilience follows naturally.
