Microneedling in Durham, science led skin repair

Microneedling is one of the most effective, science backed treatments available for improving skin quality, stimulating collagen and supporting long term skin health. At Sirens it is approached with care, restraint and clinical understanding, as part of a thoughtful, long term skin strategy.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, works by creating controlled micro channels in the upper layers of the skin. This triggers the skin’s natural repair response, encouraging the production of collagen and elastin.

Rather than forcing rapid change, microneedling allows the skin to rebuild itself gradually. Results develop over weeks and months as the skin strengthens from within.

Our approach: controlled stimulation, led by science

Microneedling here is about controlled stimulation rather than aggressive injury, and we will always choose your skin’s long term health over dramatic short term results. The aim is to work within the top layers of the skin, typically around 0.5mm, where collagen stimulation can occur safely. Going deeper does not improve results. Excessive depth increases the risk of scarring, pigmentation issues and long term skin damage.

A useful way to understand this is to think about how skin heals. A light graze heals smoothly and leaves fresh new skin behind, while a deeper cut is more likely to leave a scar. Skin responds to microneedling the same way. One of the biggest risks with aggressive microneedling is that the full effects of trauma can take up to 18 months to show: what may initially appear as glowing skin can later develop into ongoing sensitivity, pigmentation or textural issues. This is why our treatments are led by science, not trends.

What it helps, and who it suits

Microneedling may be recommended to support acne scarring and uneven skin texture, fine lines and early signs of ageing, enlarged pores, sun damage and pigmentation irregularities, and loss of firmness and elasticity. Because the treatment works by strengthening the skin from within, results build gradually and improve with consistency.

It tends to suit skin that is generally healthy and resilient, free from active infection or inflammation, and looking for long term improvement rather than surface exfoliation. It may be unsuitable if you have active acne or infection, a compromised skin barrier, significant inflammation or sensitivity, or certain medical or skin conditions. A consultation is always advised, and if microneedling is not appropriate we will recommend alternative treatments that better support your skin health.

What to expect, and the long game

Treatment time is approximately 45 minutes. Some redness or tightness is normal and usually settles within one to three days, and skin often begins to feel smoother within a week. Collagen production continues over several weeks, with results improving gradually, and full aftercare guidance is provided to support healing and protect your skin.

Microneedling is one of the treatments we recommend most for anti ageing and skin longevity when used correctly and consistently. It is supported by decades of research and clinical use rather than brands or trends. Built into a long term skin plan, it helps maintain collagen levels, support firmness and improve overall skin quality as the skin ages. It is about protecting your skin for the future.

Getting the best from your treatment

Pre care and aftercare

Microneedling asks a little of your skin either side of the appointment, and the right care makes all the difference to your results.

Before your appointment
01
Every course starts with a consultation, so we can check suitability and plan your treatment around your skin.
02
Tell us about any medication, retinoids or active skincare you use, and any skin conditions, when you book.
03
Rest strong actives such as retinoids, acids and exfoliants for a few days beforehand, and avoid sunbeds and sunburn in the week before. We will confirm timings at your consultation.
04
Arrive with clean skin where you can, and leave a buffer of a few days before any big event.
Looking after your skin afterwards
Looking a little red or feeling warm for 24 to 72 hours is normal, much like mild sunburn, and light flaking or dryness can appear two to three days later as the skin renews.
01
Keep makeup off for at least 24 hours, then light mineral makeup if needed. Always follow the specific aftercare advice we give you on the day.
02
Avoid heat, sun exposure and intense exercise for 24 to 48 hours, and protect your skin with SPF as it heals.
03
Keep your skin well hydrated and use the products we recommend. It helps the renewal along and keeps any flaking mild.
04
Hold off on retinoids, acids and exfoliants until the skin has fully settled.
05
Collagen keeps building for weeks after each session, so results grow between appointments. Your course plan spaces treatments to make the most of that.

Microneedling questions, answered

Is microneedling safe?

Yes, microneedling is considered a very safe treatment when carried out by trained professionals using sterile equipment. At Sirens we follow strict hygiene protocols and tailor every session to your skin type and goals. It is suitable for most skin tones and concerns.

How many sessions will I need?

That depends on your skin goals. For general rejuvenation, 3 to 4 sessions spaced about 4 weeks apart are often enough. For more targeted concerns like scarring or pigmentation, a full course of 6 sessions may be recommended. We will guide you based on your consultation.

Can I wear makeup after?

We recommend leaving makeup off for at least 24 hours after treatment to allow your skin to heal and reduce any risk of irritation. After that, light mineral based makeup may be used if needed. Always follow the specific aftercare advice given.

Will my skin peel?

Some clients experience light flaking or dryness 2 to 3 days after treatment as the skin regenerates. This is usually mild and temporary. Keeping your skin hydrated and using the recommended products will help minimise this.

Is there any downtime?

There is little to no formal downtime, but you may look red or feel warm for 24 to 72 hours after treatment, similar to a mild sunburn. Most clients return to normal activities the same day, though we advise staying out of heat, sun and intense exercise for 24 to 48 hours.

What our clients say

“Felt quite apprehensive about microneedling but was instantly made to feel comfortable and everything was explained clearly.”
