Sirens Beauty Salon · Durham City Centre
Most people live with a skin concern for years before they ask anyone about it. This page is the honest version, written by a team trained to paramedical level in skin: a proper look at each of the most common concerns we see in Durham, why they happen, what genuinely helps, and what we can do here. If you are not sure where your skin fits, book a skin consultation and we will tell you the truth about what will help, and just as honestly, what will not.
Acne happens when the tiny openings your hairs grow through become blocked by a mix of natural oil and skin cells that have not shed the way they should. Hormones drive how much oil your skin makes, which is why breakouts flare in the teens, around your cycle, in pregnancy and under stress. It is not a hygiene problem, and it is not your fault.
Gentle and consistent beats harsh and sporadic every time. Stripping the skin usually backfires, because skin stripped of oil often responds by making more. A simple routine you actually keep to, patience measured in weeks rather than days, and leaving spots alone. Professionally, we start with a consultation, and for suitable skins we work with DMK, which describes its approach as working with the skin’s own processes, alongside gentle peels and LED. Severe, deep or scarring acne deserves your GP as well, and we will always say so. The full picture is on our acne and problem skin page.
Pigmentation is your skin’s own protective pigment, melanin, being produced unevenly. The three usual triggers are sun, hormones and inflammation. Sun spots build slowly over years of exposure. Melasma is hormonal, often appearing in pregnancy or with contraception changes, usually across the cheeks, forehead or upper lip. And the marks left behind after a blemish are inflammation pigment, the shadow of a spot that healed. Which type you have matters, because they respond differently.
Start with the unglamorous truth: daily sunscreen is essential, because UV is what feeds pigment and no treatment can outrun unprotected sun. From there, chemical peels, microneedling and DMK treatments are designed to support the skin’s own renewal, which is how marks gradually soften as fresher skin comes through. Post blemish marks respond best of all. Deep melasma is stubborn, it is managed rather than erased, and anyone who promises to remove it completely is not being straight with you.
Sensitive skin is usually a skin barrier under strain. Your barrier is the thin outer layer that keeps moisture in and irritants out, and when it is damaged, by over exfoliating, harsh products or simply too many products, everything starts to sting and flush. Rosacea is different again, a genuine skin condition involving flushing, persistent redness and sometimes bumps, often triggered by heat, sun, alcohol or stress.
Nearly always fewer products, not more. Gentle cleansing, barrier supporting care, daily sunscreen, and cutting the scrubs and acids that keep the skin in a constant state of protest. In the salon we adapt every treatment for reactive skin, calm and barrier first, and many clients find their skin settles noticeably once it is finally being treated kindly. One honest flag: persistent facial redness deserves a proper diagnosis, so if you have never had one, see your GP too. Rosacea can be calmed and managed well.
Because the ground shifted. As oestrogen falls through perimenopause and menopause, skin produces less collagen and less of its own oil, holds less water, and renews more slowly. The practical result is skin that feels drier and thinner, looks less firm, and no longer responds to the routine that worked for twenty years. Almost nobody talks about this properly, which is why so many women quietly conclude their skin is simply done. It is not, it just needs different care.
Hydration and barrier support come first, richer care that gives the skin back what it is no longer making. Daily SPF still matters, because thinner skin marks more easily. Professionally, treatments like microneedling and DMK enzyme therapy, which DMK describes as working with the skin’s own function, are designed to support firmness and renewal, exactly the processes that have slowed. This is one of the concerns we care most about, and it responds well to being taken seriously. Come and talk to us.
Honestly: nothing stops ageing, and we would not want to, but skin can age well or age tired, and the difference is mostly collagen. From our mid twenties, collagen production slowly declines, and with it the firmness and bounce that make skin look rested. Sun exposure accelerates the loss more than anything else, which is why the same birthday can look very different on different faces.
The treatments that earn their keep are the ones designed to support your skin’s own collagen and renewal: microneedling, chemical peels, LED and DMK enzyme therapy. Which one suits you depends on your skin, your history and what you actually want to change, and that is a consultation conversation, not a menu decision. We will tell you what is realistic, and what is simply not worth your money for your skin.
Nine times out of ten it is a build up of dead surface cells hanging around longer than they should, scattering light instead of reflecting it. Slower renewal, dehydration, city life and simple tiredness all feed it. It is the least serious concern on this page, and the quickest to turn around.
In the salon, dermaplaning, gentle peels and a proper facial lift dullness quickly, sometimes in a single visit, by clearing that surface build up and getting fresh skin reflecting light again. At home, consistent gentle exfoliation, real hydration and daily SPF keep it lifted. If your skin just looks tired and you cannot say why, this is the easiest place to start, and a lovely first treatment if you are new to us.
Skin rarely reads the textbook, and plenty of people have two or three of these concerns at once. Bring us your skin concern and leave with a clear, honest plan, no obligation and no hard sell.
