Why we use hot wax

Most of our waxing is done with hot wax rather than strip wax, and it changes how the treatment feels. Strip wax grips the surface of your skin as well as the hair, which is why it can feel sharper. Hot wax goes on warm and thicker, and as it cools it shrinks around each hair and grips the hair itself rather than the skin, so there is no strip and it is far more comfortable on sensitive areas and far better on coarse hair.

We use Perron Rigot, a French wax house making professional wax since the nineteen sixties, and we choose the wax to suit the area and the hair. Strip wax still has its place on large, flat areas like full legs, where it is quicker and keeps the price down.

If you have been waxed elsewhere and found it painful, there is a good chance you were having strip wax where hot would have been kinder. It is worth trying again before you write waxing off.

Intimate waxing at Sirens

Bikini, extended bikini, Brazilian and Hollywood waxing are all carried out with hot wax, in a private room, by therapists who do them every day. Everything is priced by area and open to everybody.

Our waxing services are priced on a gender neutral basis and described by treatment area rather than gender. Our therapists are fully trained and insured to carry out waxing on clients without external male genitalia. We are not trained to provide waxing services involving a penis and are therefore unable to offer those treatments. This policy is in place to ensure safety, comfort and professional standards for all clients.

Getting the best from your wax

Pre care and aftercare

A little preparation makes your wax smoother, more comfortable and longer lasting, and the right care afterwards keeps your skin calm and clear.

Before your wax

Get the hair length right. Around 5mm, roughly a grain of rice, gives the wax enough to grip. Growing out after shaving takes about two to three weeks.

Exfoliate gently 24 to 48 hours before. It lifts dead skin, frees hairs sitting under the surface and reduces the chance of ingrown hairs.

Arrive with clean, dry skin. Coming straight from the gym or a busy day? A quick freshen up beforehand is perfect. For intimate waxing, please shower and trim.

Skip hot baths, saunas, sunbeds and strong actives for 24 hours before, as heat and sun leave skin more sensitive.

Time it well. Skin feels more sensitive right before and during your period, and intimate waxing is limited to a standard bikini at that time. Booking for an event? Go a day or two ahead so any redness settles.

Tell us before booking about any health conditions, particularly diabetes, as this can affect suitability.

Feeling nervous? Just say. We do this all day, every day, in a calm and completely judgment free way.

Looking after your skin afterwards

Mild redness, sensitivity or a light rash for a few days is a normal reaction, particularly after your first wax.

For 24 to 48 hours, stay out of pools, saunas and hot baths, and keep the area away from heat and sun.

Hold off on makeup or products over the waxed area while the skin settles.

Wear loose clothing and drink plenty of water. Your skin will thank you.

A little regrowth a few days later is normal. Hair grows in cycles, so hair that was under the skin on the day can surface afterwards. Regular waxing gives a more even growth pattern over time.

Once the skin has settled, gentle regular exfoliation helps keep ingrown hairs away between appointments.

How to stop getting ingrown hairs

An ingrown hair happens when a hair grows back and cannot get through the surface, so it curls over and grows sideways, leaving a small raised bump. They are more likely where skin is dry, where hair is coarse or curly, and where clothing rubs, which is why they turn up most on bikini lines, inner thighs and underarms.

The prevention is nearly all done at home. Exfoliate two or three times a week, starting forty eight hours after your wax. Moisturise daily, because supple skin is easier for a hair to push through. Keep tight clothing off a freshly waxed area for the first day, and keep to a regular waxing cycle.

Please leave any ingrown hair alone rather than digging at it, as that nearly always makes it worse. If one is inflamed or has been there a while, show us at your next appointment.

Waxing or shaving, which is right for you

Shaving is quick, free and easy, and there is nothing wrong with it, it just does a different job. A razor cuts the hair off at the surface, so it is back within a day or two and comes through blunt, which is what makes it feel sharp.

Waxing removes the hair from the follicle, so you get two to four weeks of genuinely smooth skin, the regrowth is softer, and because you are working with the growth cycle the hair comes through finer and sparser over time. The trade offs are honest ones. Waxing costs money, needs booking, and you have to let the hair grow between appointments. Whether that is worth it depends entirely on what you want.

Does waxing hurt?

Everyone’s pain tolerance is different, but most clients say our techniques and products make the process much more comfortable than expected. It is usually over before you know it.

How long should my hair be before waxing?

Ideally, hair should be at least a quarter of an inch, about the length of a grain of rice, to ensure effective removal.

How long do waxing results last?

Typically, you will remain hair free for 3 to 4 weeks. With regular waxing, regrowth becomes finer and sparser over time.

Can I wax during my period?

Yes, but your skin may be more sensitive. Intimate waxing is limited to a standard bikini while you are on.

What is the difference between a Brazilian and a Hollywood?

A Brazilian leaves a small strip or triangle of hair, while a Hollywood removes all hair from front to back.
