Barrier damage, and how to spot it

A damaged barrier is the number one cause of most of the skin problems I see. And the part people do not want to hear is that it is usually self inflicted, by people trying very hard to look after their skin.

What the barrier actually is

Your skin has a barrier made from sebum, your own oil, and sweat. I describe it to clients as a force field. It works in both directions: it keeps everything harmful out, and it keeps everything good in.

Strip it and your skin is broken. It can no longer keep the good guys in or the bad guys out. What follows is transepidermal water loss, which means moisture escapes continuously, and no amount of drinking water will fix that, because the water leaves as fast as it arrives. It is like leaving a kettle to boil with the lid off. It will dry out no matter how much you put in it.

What breaks it

Good intentions, almost every time. Over exfoliating. Overdoing retinol and active ingredients. Layering three actives because each one was recommended separately. Trying to force the skin into a massive change in a few weeks rather than letting it get there.

And a lot of it comes from TikTok and Facebook groups. Stop believing everything you read there. Your skin is a complex organ that already knows what it is doing. Most people would see a dramatic improvement by simply stopping fighting it.

How to spot it

Tightness after cleansing. Products that used to be fine and now sting. Redness that flares at nothing. Flaky patches sitting alongside oiliness. Breakouts that take forever to settle. Skin that looks dull no matter what you put on it, and never feels properly hydrated.

What I do about it

If your barrier is broken, I will tell you to back off everything. That means LED, Hypo21, and pretty much nothing else for around a week. Once the skin has calmed down we introduce DMK and start building properly.

Doing less feels wrong to people who are used to a ten step routine, and it is the fastest thing that works.

What I do myself

I swear by wearing oil every day with a mist. It recreates and protects the barrier rather than stripping it. Mist, serum, oil, every single day, and it is very rare for me to have any skin problem at all. That is the whole routine, and it is deliberately boring.

Why I look at this first

In a consultation I am looking at your barrier before I look at whatever you came in for. There is no point treating pigmentation or texture on skin that cannot tolerate the treatment. It will react, you will be disappointed, and we will have gone backwards. Barrier first, every time. Then the treatments you actually came for will work.
